Lake Mburo National Park
is Uganda’s most accessible savannah park, located approximately 240km (3–4 hours) west of Kampala. As the smallest of the nation’s savannah parks, it is a “compact gem” famous for being the only place in Uganda where you can see impalas.
Key Wildlife & Attractions
Predators: While lions and elephants are absent, the park has a healthy population of leopards, hyenas, and hippos.
Unique Species: Home to large populations of zebras (over 20,000), impalas (over 30,000), and the world’s largest antelope, the common eland.
Birdwatcher’s Paradise: Features over 315 bird species, including the rare shoebill stork, African finfoot, and great blue turaco.
Landscape: A diverse mix of acacia woodlands, rolling hills, and a 50km-long wetland system that includes five lakes within the park borders.
When to Visit
Best for Birding (Wet Season): March to May and October to November. The park is lush and green, and migratory birds are present.
Best for Wildlife (Dry Season): June to September and December to February. Animals congregate around Lake Mburo and other water points, making them easier to spot.
